Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye that prevents light from focusing clearly on the retina, causing blurry vision. Cataracts are generally thought to be a natural part of the aging process, but they can also be linked to certain medical conditions like diabetes or trauma to the eye. Cataract symptoms include blurry vision, dim colors, and glare from lights, and they become progressively worse over time. If cataracts are left untreated, they can cause significant vision loss. For these reasons cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide.

Surgical removal  with lens replacement is the only treatment for cataracts. Over the last decade cataract surgery has evolved, and treatment has become safer and more effective than ever before.  Now, there are new lens options that can help you achieve the goal of being glasses-free at distance, near, or both!

Some intraocular lenses (IOLs) and technology that Dr. Rolfsen offers at Waco Ophthalmology include:

                - Toric IOLs to correct astigmatism

                - Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses

                - PanOptix: trifocal / multifocal IOL

                - ORA interoperative aberrometer for improved accuracy in IOL                  selection, especially after LASIK/RK

                - Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight
