Current guidelines from the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend a complete dilated eye exam for everyone over 40 years old.  A complete eye exam can check for any problem that may need treatment, including retinal problems, glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye, and many others.  It is especially important to check for glaucoma, because this is a disease that can cause permanent vision loss without any symptoms until very late in the disease course.
